To make this delicious Valentine gift, you will need: cookie dough, chocolate hearts (or marshmallow hearts), a container, wooden skewers, floral foam, pink and/or red tissue paper, pink and red curling ribbon, a heart shaped balloon, and tools (a heart shaped cookie cutter, scissors and wire cutters).

Step 1. Prepare floral foam and a container you would like to use for your Valentine’s edible arrangement. A theme mug is used in this example.

Cut a piece of floral foam so it fits snugly into the container. Wrap the foam in pink or red tissue paper before putting it into the container.

Step 2. Next step in making this homemade gift is to bake heart-shaped cookies.

You can use your favorite cookie dough recipe or one of the two recipes below:
Sugar Cookies recipes: 1 cup of softened butter, 1 cup of sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp of vanilla extract, 3 cups of flour, 1 tsp of baking powder, 3/4 tsp of salt.

My mom’s cookie recipe: 1 cup of softened butter, 1 or 1 1/4 cup of sugar, 3 cups of flour, 3 eggs, 1/2 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of vanilla extract. You will get approximately 35 medium sized heart shaped cookies (enough for 3 cookie bouquets).

The cookies should be about 1/2” thick so you can insert a wooden skewer or a lollipop stick into the base of each cookie to about the middle of the cookie.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on baking sheets for several minutes before transferring them to a plate using a spatula. Do not pick up the cookies by their stick until they are completely cool.

Note: The wooden skewers can turn a little bit brown in the oven.

Step 3. Decorate cookies with icing.

Prepare icing using your favorite recipe or this one: You need 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoon of milk, 1/4 teaspoon of clear vanilla extract. I like and use this because it gets shiny when dries.

Divide icing between several bowls. You will need about 1 teaspoon of icing for a medium sized heart cookie. You will have one bowl with white icing, one bowl with pink icing (add pink food coloring) and one bowl with red icing (add red food coloring).

Note: If you don’t have red or pink food coloring at hand, you can use a little bit of cranberry juice.

Decorate the cookies the way you want. You can decorate some cookies with M&Ms, Skittles, and sprinkles.

Step 4. Arrange cookies in the container.

You can insert cookies as they are.

I decided to attach a piece of pink or red tissue paper to each cookie flower stem. I like when my arrangements look rich and you can’t see wooden sticks. If you don’t remember how to attach tissue paper/cello to sticks, go to this page.

Put your edible bouquet together any way you like. Push the sticks into the foam. Start with the tallest cookie flower in the middle of the arrangement. Then work toward the front. Finally insert some cookies in the back of the arrangement so your cookie bouquet looks good all around.
